Which Pocket & Personal Handheld DAB Radio is Best?

When choosing a small dab radio it’s important to distinguish between pocket and personal. Both type of radios may well fit into your pocket but the main difference between the two is that a pocket radio will generally have a loudspeaker and be intended to be held in your hand while you and others listen (think being at a cricket or football match), while a personal radio will generally be used with headphones (think being at the gym or out running) whilst tucked away in your pocket.

Now that we have that out of the way it’s time to think about which type you need and which model you should purchase based on your needs. There are many reasons for wanting a handheld DAB radio compared to a bigger portable one so its important to decide what you need your for before purchasing. Most people will want one to:

  • Bring to the football match, cricket grounds or race track
  • Use whilst running or in the gym
  • Use instead of a bigger radio that they may have trouble lifting
  • Use on the move – the train or car to work, or a long trip
  • Use in the garden or even at the beach

Now that you have had a think and know which type of radio you need here are our top 5 reviews of both pocket and personal digital radios:

Best Personal DAB Digital Radio Reviews

Pure Move 2500 Personal DAB Radio review

The Pure Move 2500 is a good choice if you travel often, enjoy running or just listening to your favorite stations while working out in the gym. (Read our full review here)

  • Audio Signal: DAB, DAB+, FM
  • Battery Type: Rechargeable Pure ChargePAK M1
  • Playtime: Up to 15 hours
  • Preset Stations: 10 DAB & 10 FM
  • Accessories: Earphones, battery pack, charger

What makes the Pure Move 2500 stand out from the crowd is its reception. The digital tuner will allow you to listen to music on the go, as it will lock to the most powerful signal wherever you are. This is especially important if you are in the area where FM signal and DBA reception aren’t that good, such as on the train. With this radio, you’ll enjoy a clear reception, without that annoying hissing sound.

One great thing about this radio is that it has a long lasting battery that allows for up to 14 hours of playtime with a single charge and it can be charged via USB or adapter. The noise-isolating headphones are also great if you want to enjoy music without being distracted by the outside noise.

The LCD screen is designed in such a way that enables you to clearly see DAB signal strength, the station name, battery and volume level. The volume wheel is very responsive (which makes changing volume easy), although the other controls can be a little too sensitive, which can make them difficult to control.

This is one of the most expensive personal DAB radios on the market but to be honest its expensive because its one of the best quality that you can buy.

Roberts Radio Sports DAB5 DAB/DAB+/FM Personal Digital DAB Radio Review

  • Audio Signal: DAB, DAB+, FM
  • Battery Type: Uses 2 x LR6 (AA size) batteries (not included)
  • Playtime: Dependent on batteries you use (High power rechargeable recommended)
  • Preset Stations: 5 DAB & 5 FM
  • Accessories: Earphones

The Roberts Sports DAB 5 is a good choice if you’re looking for a stylish, easy to use, and reliable radio.

Thanks to FM, DAB and DAB+ tuner, you’ll have quick access to 40 radio stations. This is especially handy if you love listening to the radio shows, sports broadcasts, or various kinds of music. Moreover, you can save up to 10 pre-set stations (5 DAB & 5 Fm), and that way you’ll have favorite stations at hand to quicly flick through.

The controls are placed on top of the radio, making them easy and simple to use. That’s why this radio is a great choice for older people who don’t want to bother with numerous buttons and thanks to a clever key lock, the stations won’t accidentally change. We also love the large blue back lit display that at a glance gives a clear picture of the station name, battery life, time and signal strength.

Some things to take note are that the supplied earphones arent the best quality and there are no actual clips on the radio meaning you may have to purchase a belt pouch if you want to have this radio clipped to you rather than having to hold it in your hand.

Also since the radio is powered by two batteries, listening to DAB will drain the batteries a lot faster than Fm – bear this in mind and remember to use rechargeable batteries.

OXX Clip pocket Radio DAB/DAB+/FM Personal Radio Review

  • Audio Signal: DAB, DAB+, FM
  • Battery Type: Internal Rechargeable Battery
  • Playtime: Up to 8 hours DAB & 22 hours FM
  • Preset Stations: N/A
  • Accessories: S120 earbuds, charging cable, aux cable

If you’re looking to buy a little radio that takes listening to music to a whole another level, then this is the one to get. Some of the other models on this list only feature a DAB and FM signal, this one also provides a DAB+ digital tuner. Thanks to this, the sound quality is outstanding even if you happen to be in a crowded area. In addition, the sound is clear, without any interference.

As far as the reception is concerned, the radio provides a strong signal, on the bus, train, and in the gym, so you won’t have to worry about the signal cutting off.

The Oxx clip truly is the best small digital radio – being about the size of a box of matches this radio is tiny but dont be worried about losing or misplacing it as the strong clip attached to it means you can easily clip it to your belt or shirt pocket.

When it comes to the battery life, you can enjoy 22 hours of FM playtime, and around 8 hours of DAB and DAB+ playtime and the ability to charge via USB saves messing about with batteries.

Thanks to a handy stereo output, you can play DAB on external devices, filling your home with a top-notch sound. This is great if you want to make lunch or dinner while listening to your favorite station.

The manual is a bit confusing although you won’t have any trouble with setting it up because it’s very simple. As with the previous model on our list, this one also comes with headphones that don’t perform very well. Still, this isn’t a big issue, because you can always buy another pair.

VQ Blighty Personal Digital Radio (DAB/DAB+/FM) Review

  • Audio Signal: DAB, FM
  • Battery Type: Internal Rechargeable Battery
  • Playtime: Up to 10 hours
  • Preset Stations: 10 presets
  • Accessories: Earphones, USB charging cable

Whether you want to listen to your favorite music, news, or even sports broadcasts, the VQ Blighty might be just what you need, because it offers a plethora of DBA stations.

DAB station reception is great, meaning that you can listen to the radio while running, walking, or even hiking. In addition, the battery lasts for 10 hours per charge, so you won’t have to deal with charging it every single day.

Since the radio provides a crystal clear sound, and loud volume, you’ll hear songs and news clearly. This is especially useful if you happen to be in a noisy environment.

As far as the design is concerned, the radio looks cool and feels good. We love the stylish LCD screen with white font, because it’s easy to read, even in daylight. We also find the controls easy to use and very convenient, as they don’t have a number of useless features. Plus the radio comes in four different colors to choose from. Best of all, its convenient size allows for an easy fit into your pocket.

On the other hand, the headphones are of poor quality, so you might want to get a new pair for a better listening experience. Another downside of the radio is its compatibility as unfortunately, this radio won’t work with some headphones, including iPod earbuds.

MAJORITY CB1A-DAB-BLK Petersfield Personal Digital Radio Review

  • Audio Signal: DAB, FM
  • Battery Type: Internal Rechargeable Battery
  • Playtime: Up to 9-12 hours
  • Preset Stations: 10 DAB & 10 FM
  • Accessories: Earphones, USB charging cable (micro USB)

For those looking for a budget radio with good performance, there is the Majority Petersfield. With this little guy, you can listen to a wide variety of channels whether you’re at your home, in your car or at work.

The unit features both FM radio and DAB digital and is capable of saving 20 preset stations (10 DAB & 10 Fm). This allows for quick access to your favorite stations.

As for the battery, you can listen to the radio for 10-12 hours on a single charge. This is especially convenient if you’re traveling and want a radio that won’t let you down.

What makes this radio stand out is the design. Not only does the radio look stylish, but its controls are easy to use. This radio is compact and lightweight, thus you can put it in the front pocket of your jeans. Best of all, the blue screen is easy to read and even shows the time.

As far as the downside is concerned, the sound quality isn’t great, as it is a little bit tinny.

The radio does come with earphones though they do tend to easily fall out. Nonetheless, the radio gives you good value for the money and is a good entry level DAB radio, however, we would recommend spending a little bit of extra money to get the OXX Clip.

  • Battery Type: Internal Rechargeable Battery
  • Playtime: Up to 20 hours runtime on headphones and 15 hours on loudspeaker
  • Preset Stations: 20
  • Accessories: USB Charging Cable

You’ll be surprised how this tiny radio boasts great sound quality. Around the size of a deck of cards and fitting in the palm of your hand this Sony radio has a solid build and is not flimsy in any way and since it is a Sony, this radio gives a high-quality sound and almost seamless reception.

The battery used is similar to most mobile phones and is charged through USB port. The battery life is long-lasting, with more or less 20 hours runtime on headphones and 15 hours on loudspeaker.

While it is more expensive compared to other DAB sets, we can say that the Sony XDR-P1DBP Pocket DAB is worth every penny.

Roberts Radio Sports DAB/FM RDS Pocket Digital Radio with Loudspeaker Review

  • Audio Signal: DAB, FM
  • Battery Type: Internal Rechargeable Battery
  • Preset Stations: 20
  • Accessories: Mains Lead, Earphones

The Roberts SportsDab II is a 2nd generation DAB radio from Roberts. It is more versatile compared to the first SportsDab issue, complete with built-in speaker, a headphone socket, as well as two aerials (one is through the headphones).

Not only it is equipped with these features, the SportsDab II is also built for extended use. Its built-in battery is rechargeable and allows you to charge it up for continuous music playing and catching up with the sports commentary anytime, anywhere.

Its black finish looks tough and sporty and the blue backlight on display adds to its appeal. Its slightly annoying that the shiny finish may make fingerprints noticeable but nonetheless it has a bright display with large text size, making it easier to see when navigating channels and other settings.

Performance-wise, both DAB and FM receptions are great. Try cycling around for miles and the reception quality would stay the same; no signal drop for this one! Also, when using it in a car, it surprisingly has good reception and sound quality, despite its mini size. Just be careful with its aerial; it can be a bit delicate.

Goodmans Pocket Sized Digital & FM Radio with Speaker Review

  • Audio Signal: DAB, FM
  • Battery Type: Rechargeable Li-ion Battery
  • Playtime: 13 hours (Headphone mode), 6 hours (Speaker mode)
  • Preset Stations: 20 DAB
  • Accessories: USB cable

Another DAB radio that meets our standards is the pocket sized digital/FM radio by Goodmans. This Goodmans pocket DAB radio boasts surprisingly crisp and clear sound with both commentary and music.

Indoors, the reception is quite fine, thanks to its aerial, giving out around 3 dozens stations. Use the earphones and retune the device and you’ll get more. Now, try it outdoors and it will definitely give you around 48 stations to choose from.

Like most DAB radios, the reception would be patchy whenever the aerial is retracted and the device is indoors. However, it manages to receive quite a few stations while in a moving car and the aerial retracted, so it is quite impressive.

A bonus feature is that it uses a rechargeable BL-5C battery, which you can easily replace, say, you don’t have any means to charge it via USB (while in a camping trip, etc.).

Romsey Pocket DAB Radio With Speaker Review

  • Audio Signal: DAB, FM
  • Battery Type: Internal rechargeable battery
  • Playtime: 9-12 Hours playback when using headphones and around 6 hours play using the in-built speaker.
  • Preset Stations: 10 DAB & 10 FM
  • Accessories: Earphones, micro USB charging cable

The Romsey DAB is probably one of the least expensive portable DAB radios in the market. You may think that you won’t get much from a 27 quid radio, but hey, might as well give this tiny one a chance.

The first thing you’ll notice upon opening the box is its look. Maybe it is a bit flimsy-looking, not to mention really lightweight. It is compact and cheap-looking, to be honest, but it has quality, features, and affordability that is really hard to resist.

Among its features are the 9-12 hours playback and automatic time set. You can also save up to 20 preset stations.

It is easy to use and not as complicated as other DAB radios, making it ideal for people who haven’t used a DAB radio before. Sound quality is fine with both music and commentary particularly when used with earphones.

The built in speaker provides loud enough sound but expect no bass.
